Are there such things as ghosts? I cannot confidently answer this question and it drives me mad not knowing. There are times when I say, ‘yes! there definitely are such things as ghosts, how can there not be after all those sightings?‘ and other times when I say, ‘Nah, of course there is no such thing, there would be solid proof by now if there was‘. But my opinion changes day-to-day.
There have been two occasions when I have experienced things which I can not explain and these are the reasons for my half-belief in them. The first occasion was when I was alone in my apartment one evening. My husband was working late and so I went to bed. Something awoke me, and in the darkness I saw a figure enter the room and walk past the bed, which I thought was my husband coming in from work. I sat up and said, ‘hi Nathan,’ to which there was no reply. I switched on the lamp and soon realised that Nathan hadn’t returned from work yet. (I kept the light on until Nathan returned home that night!)
The other spooky occurrence happened to me one Sunday morning. After a shower, I walked into the bedroom to be surrounded by an overpowering aroma which lasted for only a few seconds. It was the unmistakable scent of my late, great nanna and granddad’s house. It was so strong that I ran into the front room to tell my husband what I had just experienced. That day, my mum and dad came over and I happened to mention this to them. They glanced at each other and smiled, telling me that it would have been my great nanna’s birthday that day.
So, were my experiences real signs that ghosts do indeed exist? Had I been visited by my great nanna that Sunday morning, or was it my subconscious simply remembering the date and reminding me of my great nanna by fooling me into thinking I could smell her house? Was I sharing my bedroom with a ghostly visitor the evening my husband was working late, or was I just half asleep and expecting him to return and so imagined it all? I guess I will never know. How frustrating.
I have always been tempted to visit a psychic medium; have a one-to-one reading. Maybe the medium could give me a message from a deceased relative and tell me things that only I would know, thus proving the paranormal existence of them? However, even if a medium did give me personal and accurate facts, I still think I’d be skeptical – maybe I gave something away? Maybe they know me somehow? Maybe it was a coincidence..? Nope, in my case, unless I actually come face-to-face with a transparent figure, rattling chains in the middle of the night, I don’t think I will ever be truly convinced, just hopeful.
